True Brit! 2000 AD Explodes the Cool Britannia Myth

Cover art by Dermot Power

Happy 21st Birthday 2000 AD! This is how we partied in 1998 – Judge Dredd and Mean Machine Angel go to Scotland and butt heads with a mutant clan; Nikolai Dante visits Britannia and saves the mad King Henry from being deposed; and Sinister Dexter go after Bob Hoskins and Michael Caine.

Meanwhile B.L.AI.R. 1 features a procession of late nineties pop culture cameos – Mystic Meg! Bob Monkhouse! Emma Bunton! Wotsisname Keith from The Prodigy! Paul McCartney!

B.L.A.I.R. 1 might just be the ultimate dodgy joke stretched way too far and I hope this is now the last we’ll see of it.

Durham Red takes a break this week as there is no way it would have fit into the Cool Britannia theme but we will get a double-length episode next prog – but that’s not next week because in 1998 this issue was on sale for a fortnight! A precursor to the xmas progs of the 2000′s.

In this prog:

Judge Dredd: Headbangers
Script: John Wagner / Art: Alex Ronald / Colours: Gary Cauldwell / Letters: Tom Frame

Nikolai Dante: Cruel Britannia
Script: Robbie Morrison / Art: Simon Fraser / Colours: Alison Kirkpatrck / Letters: Annie Parkhouse

B.L.A.I.R. 1: Criminal Record
Script: Alan Grant / Art: SB Davis / Letters: Annie Parkhouse

Sinister Dexter: London Town
Script: Dan Abnett / Art: Greg Staples / Letters: Ellie De Ville

Mega-City’s Night Mayor – Maybe Has Murder On His Mind

Cover art by Cliff Robinson

These issues of 2000 AD from the start of 2008 are really good. Judge Dredd is at his absolute best – there’s police work, politics and PJ Maybe – all good things when written by John Wagner. Meanwhile Shakara, Stickleback and Kingdom are on top form. The only outlier is Strontium Dog. It’s good but feels a little outdated – more of an adventure from the mid-eighties perhaps. Still, Carlos Ezquerra artwork though – so good.

In this prog:

Judge Dredd: Emphatically Evil – The Life and Crimes of PJ Maybe part 4
Script: John Wagner / Art: Colin MacNeil / Colours: Chris Blythe / Letters: Annie Parkhouse

Shakara: The Defiant part 7
Script: Robbie Morrison / Art: Henry Flint / Letters: Annie Parkhouse

Strontium Dog: The Glum Affair part 7

Stickleback: England’s Glory part 7
Script: Ian Edgington / Art: D’Israeli / Letters: Ellie De Ville
